New modesty. Architecture in straitened circumstances

New modesty. Architecture in straitened circumstances

Deutsches Architektur Zentrum DAZ
Köpenicker Straße 48/49
10179 Berlin

Starts: 6.12.2014
Ends: 26.01.2014

Is there a "new modesty" in the face of dwindling resources and complex crises? The DAZ presents selected concepts from architects who see building as a social and cultural mission: a.gor.a architects, Brandlhuber+, ELEMENTAL, Anupama Kundoo and TYIN tegnestue Architects. The projects share in common that they were developed in collaborative practise, use locally available building materials and achieve highquality in times of scare resources. In videos, photographs, plans, sample materials and a walk-in model, the DAZ makes architectures tangible that react creatively and in all restraint to this new reality using simple means. The exhibition is curated by Anna Jehle, Thomas Thiel and Andreas Wannenmacher for the Bielefelder Kunstverein.

Opening remarks by Michael Frielinghaus, President of the BDA, Thomas Thiel, Director of the Bielefelder Kunstverein, and Matthias Böttger, Artistic Director of the DAZ.

On 6.12.2003 at 17.30 p.m. the curators Thomas Thiel and Andreas Wannenmacher of the Bielefelder Kunstvereins will guide through the exhibition (in German).

ZERO YEARS

ZERO YEARS

Freies Museum Berlin
Bülowstraße 90,
10783 Berlin

Ends: 31.01.2014

Slovak visual art 1999 – 2011 from four curatorial perspectives

The Zero Years exhibition presents works of authors, who shaped Slovak visual art during the years 1999 – 2011. The concept of the exhibition is derived from the activities of the four authors of the project, who substantially took part in various events in art of this decade through organising exhibitions, art critique, studies, education, founding of galleries, grants, art prizes and alternative activities, work in the area of cultural politics and legislation. Their curatorial and critical experiences are reflected in the themes and models of each of the sections: critical reading of a picture, authenticity in the post-national time, work of art as an experience / the role of the personal experience, key works of art as a basis for a future permanent display of the “zero years”, and so on.

The exhibition presents works of artists in a wide and more than one generation collection, but focused on precise selection, with the emphasis on lasting mediated value. The exhibition is accompanied

Speaking Images – Speaking of Images | Image Knowledge Gestaltung. An Interdisciplinary Laboratory

Speaking Images – Speaking of Images | Image Knowledge Gestaltung. An Interdisciplinary Laboratory

Foyer des Jacob-und- Wilhem-Grimm-Zentrum,
Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 3
10117 Berlin

Ends: 05.02.2014

An ethnographic exhibition on the use of images at the Image Knowledge Gestaltung (BWG) Cluster of Excellence Interdisciplinary Laboratory of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Images permeate the world in which we live. It is almost impossible to imagine being without them as a means of orientation in public space, for passing on information or for the entertainment industry. In research too the importance of images is constantly increasing.

The »Speaking Images – Speaking of Images« exhibition asks how images are understood and used in the sciences. It is both an inventory and an experiment because it presents the variety of imagery as used in the sciences on the one hand while on the other extending an invitation to a fundamental discussion on the understanding of images in the sciences.

For the exhibition 13 scientists from the Image Knowledge Gestaltung Interdisciplinary Laboratory were each asked to select and present three images from their work. Participants from such widely differing areas as biology, architecture, computer science or theatre studies explained in ethnographic interviews why they chose their images and how they understand and use images. There are many conflicting answers to the question of just what an image is. As the exhibition’s initiator and host the Interdisciplinary Laboratory Image Knowledge Gestaltung’s basic project on Shaping Knowledge invites you take part in a dialogue and to reflect on these issues...
