Course Description:
In this course, students will learn the concept of signature photos :
what is the unique photographic element that can be found in an image or captured in a moment? Students will also discover signature photos in the work of great classical photographers. This semester, students will visit the Walker Evans exhibition.
With guidance from a professional photographer, practical assignments, photo-shooting around the city, students will be able to develop their skills and find their own signature style.
Week 1.
Lecture: Introduction to photo signatures
Assignment: Find a photo signature in your favorite photo
Week 2.
Visit: The Walker Evans exhibition. Students will bring their own camera to take pictures on the way to the exhibition. Assignment: Find a photo signature that resembles one of the stylistic elements of Walker Evans
Week 3.
Visit: Refine your own style
Students will explore the city together with the instructor and find photo signatures that gives inspiration to shoot. Assignment: Explore and take photos of your favorite spot in Berlin either by yourself, or with others
Week 4.
Lecture: Students will view and discuss pictures and signature images taken during the course
Assignment: Celebrate the end of the course! Students and the instructor can meet in the park for a picnic or visit the instructor’s studio ( Kreutzigerstr. 10)
By the end of the course you should be able to:
- Deepen your understanding of master photographers through the concept of photo signatures
- Apply the concept of photo signatures to sharpen your vison for timeless compositions
- Learn how to fine tune your camera to capture the photo signatures you see

This course is designed for anyone who is interested in the subject.
How will I be taught and will there be any work outside the class?
The class will be organized in lectures, visits and walking around the city. Top-tips from a working photographer will be given to the students throughout the course.
Instructor: Tim Deussen
Tim Deussen was born on the 1st of May 1968, in Germany. He studied photography at the New York University. Since his graduation with an MA Degree in 1996, he participated with his photo and video works in numerous exhibits, among them “Show your Wound” at the Goethe Institute in Tel Aviv, “The means of Art” at Kunsthaus Dresden, “Easy Transport” at the Museum of contemporary art in Skopje Macedonia, and several exhibits in Berlin where he has his studio and works as a freelance photographer.
